DESKTOP WIDGETS / LITTLE WORLDS

Widgets are the stage. Your cast is the star.

In the app, pick a performer and a layout, then fill each slot with a scene. Apply, place the widgets on your desktop, and the performer flies in from outside the group, passes through each little world in turn, and stops in the right scenes for a performance of its own.

Four steps to a livelier desktop.

Cast, layout and scenes stay in a draft until you choose Apply. You add and place the widgets yourself in macOS.

01 / CAST

First, choose today's performer.

Meet A-Ying: a yellow raincoat, a lantern, and six scenes on a rainy night. Each performer has their own scenes. Their size is set before entering and stays the same throughout the performance.

  1. Choose a published performer
  2. Each performer is adapted to all of their own scenes
  3. More performers in the works

Before you start.

From system requirements to placing widgets, here is what people ask most.

01What do I need?A Mac with macOS 14 or later.→

castlands is a native macOS app, and its widgets use the system's WidgetKit. It is coming soon and not yet available to download.

02Will the widgets place themselves? No. You add and place them on your desktop yourself.→

macOS doesn't let apps place widgets for you. Open castlands once, then search for castlands in Edit Widgets on your desktop and, following the app's guide, add each one, keep them the same size and line them up.

03When does the cast pause? When it can't confirm where the widgets are, it pauses instead of guessing.→

If a window covers the widgets, they move, their number or size doesn't match the setup, or displays change, the performer hides and pauses until a new check passes.

04Do scenes and cast need downloading? They download on first launch, then update in the background.→

Scene art and performer assets are not bundled with the installer. The app downloads and verifies each file on first launch, then checks for new versions in the background; updates apply on the next launch.
